¿Por qué tomamos café?

Why do we drink coffee?

Existing manuscripts from the IXth century document Sufi Monks from Yemen drinking coffee so they could stay awake during their meditations. According to what the codex Abd-Al-Kadir says, the tree grew wild in Abyssinia (current Ethiopia). Omar, a medicine student from Mocha, accidentally discovered the coffee tree, and thus began cultivating it and drinking the crushed bean in the Yemenite religious communities.

coffee history

To meet «to have a coffee» is a typical resource to socializing.

The use of coffee spread from Mocha among the Sufis from the Arabic peninsula; Egypt, Syria, Persia and Turkey. The port of Mocha therefore concentrated the worldwide coffee trade during the XVth to XVIIIth centuries.

In Arab cultures the so called “schools of the wise” became popular, and intellectuals of all subjects had their discussions over coffee. The habit of drinking coffee in the aristocratic classes of Europe flourished in the Ottoman Empire throughout Italy and Austria and in the XVIIth century the firsts coffee shops were opened in the most important European cities: London, Paris, Vienna, Venice and Amsterdam welcomed the trend not only of drinking coffee, but of meeting in public places to discuss political and religious topics.

Both the preparation and tasting of coffee have adapted to different cultures: with or without sugar, with spices, boiled, filtered, with milk, with cream, with liquor… coffee seems to be a critical bean for half the planet. After much research done, it’s scientifically agreed to carry more benefits than damages: it is antioxidative, prevents diabetes II, it reduces uric acid levels, prevents hepatic cirrhosis, it is stimulating and it favours neurotransmitter functions of the brain for its contribution of potassium, magnesium, manganese, vitamins B2, B5 and niacin.

Coffee consumption has doubled in the last twenty years and keeps on increasing, since countries with less coffee drinking tradition like Japan, China and Russia are joining in with this ancient habit too. The way of having a coffe is changing as it’s now consumed on the street, in parks, during journeys…
