Why are pizza boxes square if pizzas are round?

Out of the millions of questions that are asked every day on Google, there are some that are already mythical, due to the number of times they are repeated. “Why is the sky blue?”, “Why do cats purr?” or “Why are pizza boxes square if pizzas are round?” are some of those that have become part of the ranking of the most frequently asked questions on Google. We have the answer for at least for the latter.

Pizza boxes are square because it’s easier to make a square box than a round one. It’s not much of a mystery. And their functionality, after all, is the same: the edges of the pizza touch the four sides of the box, which prevents it from moving. In addition, the empty corners make it easier to pick up the pizza and this space can be used to put, for example, the sauce sachets.

At García de Pou we have customisable square pizza boxes in various sizes.

Square boxes also allow you to fit a pizza inside them comfortably, even if it is irregularly shaped. In short, square pizza boxes are more practical and take up less space when stored folded until use.

Making round boxes, on the other hand, is more complex. It requires two sheets, one for the base and one for the lid, and also generates more waste by cutting the excess cardboard. In general, the manufacturing costs are higher and their functionality lower. But that has not prevented some adventures from happening. In 2012, for example, Steve Jobs patented a round pizza box. So far it is only used by Apple employees who eat pizza in the canteens of the Cupertino headquarters.

At García de Pou we have round pizza boxes made of sugar cane, a 100% ecological material.

But that does not mean that packaging design departments have given up. We are not going to discover now the commercial relevance of product packaging. So why not manufacture a pizza box with the same advantages as the square pizza box, but with a more original and attractive shape?

At García de Pou we have done just that and we have launched an octagonal pizza box on the market. You can find it in the new THEPACK® product line. The box meets all the requirements for this type of packaging and is also made with the latest technology, nano-micro corrugated cardboard, a more resistant, lighter material that maintains the temperature better. It is functional, easy to store and environmentally responsible. And it has some advantages over square cardboard. Its octagonal shape limits and reduces the mobility of the pizza inside the box and its aesthetics are much more attractive. In other words, with the octagonal pizza box we have squared the circle.

Octagonal cardboard pizza boxes by García de Pou, a product to distinguish yourself from other businesses.

This box breaks away from generic and conventional pizza packaging, which tends to be identical. Packaging must pay special attention to design. If it were not for the design, it would be a simple protective packaging, and the packaging goes beyond that: it is the letter of introduction of the product.

At García de Pou we also have triangular packaging, for serving take away pizza slices.

We live in a world with a constant need to provoke new emotions in the consumer. Going out of the conventional is practically obligatory if you want to stand out. Daring with a octagonal or round pizza box, which is out of the established canons, can be a first step. García de Pou’s aim is to offer our customers the widest variety of products to choose from.
