As we have every year for over 30 years, we commissioned a famous artists to design the cover of the annual García de Pou catalogue. On this occasion, the painter and illustrator Leonard Beard did us the honour for the second time. We were so happy with his work for the cover of the catalogue in 2015 that we asked him to do it again. “Being commissioned to do this a second time was a big challenge for me and, perhaps more importantly, it highlights a stylistic and human connection conducive to good work”, says Leonard Beard.
Born in Coventry in 1962, Leo Beard lives and works in Alt Empordà. He began exhibiting his work in the 1980s and began to collaborate on a weekly basis with the Sunday edition of El Periódico in the 1990s, for which he illustrated the articles written by Quim Monzó. He currently draws the illustrations for opinion articles in the daily edition of El Periódico. Internationally, he has been published in Courrier International, Guardian Weekend Magazine, Atlanta Magazine, Dallas Magazine and London Financial News, among others. He also illustrated one of the most legendary Vinçon bags during the economic crisis, on which the image depicts a man with a brick in his mouth.
For the cover of this catalogue, Leo Beard has successfully conveyed the personality of García de Pou and our products. According to the artist, the image contrasts the immensity of an open space with the small universe of a food truck and its people. “I was attracted by the idea of extremes, of reflecting how far the products made by García de Pou could reach, and showing that in a poetic, appealing and yet powerful way. The fact that the food truck poster is the characteristic García de Pou cone produces a highly effective synergy and connects with the informal nature of pop art”, explains Leo Beard, adding that his creation is “reminiscent of an American ‘road movie’ with a hint of Empordà”.
Besides Leo Beard, the other artists to have drawn or painted the cover of our catalogue include Javier Mariscal, Daniel Torres, Forges, Antonio Vives Fierro, Ramon Moscardó, Antoni Pitxot and Manel Anoro. For Leo Beard, our initiative to commission artists for the cover “gives the company a seal of characteristic quality while demonstrating a significant commitment to culture”.
