Premium-quality melamine tableware: modern, stylish and functional

Premium-quality melamine tableware is back in fashion in the hotel and restaurant sector, and it’s no wonder, since its shape, appearance and finish is modern and attractive – very much in keeping with current trends.

In terms of quality, premium melamine crockery is on a par with porcelain or ceramic tableware. In fact, it is so similar that it can be difficult to tell them apart at first glance.

But that’s not all. It also has key benefits for the hospitality industry compared to other materials:

  • Premium-quality melamine tableware is resistant to all kinds of knocks and accidental falls that may occur during service.
  • Non-scratch, dishwasher safe and, therefore, durable.
  • It can withstand high and low temperatures.
  • At the same time, its low thermal conductivity prevents kitchen and waiting staff from getting burnt when picking up utensils.
  • And, last but not least, it is very lightweight and easily stackable.

At García de Pou we have a wide range of premium-quality melamine products:

A bit of history

Industrial use of melamine was developed by German scientists in the 1930s. The manufacture of kitchen utensils gained ground during periods of war in the middle of the century, as the material fulfilled all the necessary requirements: it was lightweight and virtually unbreakable and metals were too expensive and too scarce. Thousands of melamine plates, cups and cutlery were produced at the time for US Navy ships.

In the 1950s, melamine found a large market in Europe and the United States and began to be used on a massive scale in the hospitality and catering industry. Brightly-coloured melamine cookware began to appear that was not only practical but also attractive and modern. In the 1960s, its design fitted in perfectly with the aesthetics of the time, and, as a result, it became highly popular.

Premium-quality melamine tableware is most commonly used in businesses with swimming pools, terraces or gardens.

Melamine tableware today

Since then, the material has not stopped evolving and improving, resulting in the premium-quality melamine that we know today. In the beginning, its use was limited to cutlery and informal or children’s tableware, because, although it was very hard-wearing, it scratched easily. Nowadays, however, the material’s excellent quality means that it is used to make all types of tableware, including luxury varieties. Today, a table set with premium-quality melamine can look just as elegant, if not more so, than one set with porcelain tableware.

In fact, current designs are modelled on porcelain, with the same decorative reliefs and shapes, but at a more economical price and without the risk of breakage. Melamine is commonly used on boats and in caravans and camping sites, due to its extraordinary durability, as well as in establishments with terraces or swimming pools, to avoid accidental cuts on the feet caused by broken ceramic or glass utensils.

Melamine is perfect for all types of hospitality-industry businesses and large-scale events, such as weddings, or catering services. No other tableware offers the benefits that premium-quality melamine offers, which is why it is considered the all-round perfect tableware. If you are thinking of changing your business’ plates or bowls, the versatility, elegance and price of premium-quality melamine will no doubt be tempting.
