Single-use paper and board packaging as part of the solution rather than part of the problem

The draft European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, still under discussion, foresees that, in the coming years, some single-use packaging will be progressively replaced by reusable packaging in the food sector. However, this draft has not taken into account the peculiarities of a very important part of the sector such as fast food and take-away, where the effect could be the opposite of the desired one. According to a recent study, washing these containers correctly will mean an immense waste of water, an increasingly scarce commodity, and could lead to hygiene problems and cross-contamination.

Garcia de Pou invests in the Planet

One of the planet’s most biodiverse green lungs, Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, has been threatened in recent years by deforestation. That is why the NGO WeForest decided in 2014 to launch a project to tackle the problem in some critical points of this tropical forest, with the aim of restoring and recovering the area’s wildlife, as well as helping local communities to earn a living from this recovery work. Products made from recycled paper are growing in popularity

It is not for nothing that paper is one of the most recycled materials and, also, it is being recycled better and better, in other words, more efficiently and sustainably. So, it is not surprising that the production of such products is increasing and that consumer demand is growing.

Reusable or single-use packaging – That is the question

One of the dilemmas that hospitality owners face, from an environmental point of view, is whether it is better to use reusable or single-use tableware in their businesses. A priori, the use of reusable packaging might seem to favour a circular economy. But a thorough life-cycle analysis of different packaging, commonly used in quick-service establishments, shows that the environmental footprint of single-use packaging is smaller and therefore contributes to a more sustainable world.

Ending food waste

One of the objectives of the United Nations (UN) for the coming years is to halve food waste, a problem that affects all countries in the world, especially the most populated ones. It is estimated that 931 million tonnes of food are thrown away every year, a figure that we should try to reduce as much as possible if we want to help solve one of the biggest problems facing us as a species: how a world population that is constantly growing and with limited resources will feed itself in the future.

The multiple lives of a paper bag

Paper shopping bags are increasingly being used in shops. They have long since caught up with plastic bags in terms of performance, strength and durability. They also surpass them in certain aspects, such as brand visibility. But it is the environmental benefits that make them the preferred choice for consumers and shop owners alike. Now, thanks to a study, we also know that reuse is more common than we thought.
